How to Grow Shiitake Mushrooms at Home

May 21 @ 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

Our dear friend, Dennis Sharmahd and mushroom expert will guide us
through the process and share his deep knowledge of the mushroom

kingdom. From his many years of experience, he has developed an easy
and successful way to grow many varieties of mushrooms.
This class will also focus on understanding the soil biology by seeing the
microorganisms under a microscope. Our resident Lab Technician, Isaac
Diaz, will cover the science of the soil and show slides of the various
microorganisms and describe how the nutrient cycling functions. You will
learn how the soil food web operates. Our goal is to teach you how to
grow mushrooms, so you can grow the fungi you need to add to your soil
for improving the diversity of nutrients, thereby improving the quality of
the food you grow.

We will be learning how to grow Shiitake Mushrooms the traditional way on Oak Logs. The class will cover the following topics.

* The basics of mushroom cultivation
* Different techniques for growing Shiitake mushrooms
* What different type of trees you can use
* How to inoculate the logs
* How to care for your logs
* How to create or find a good space to grow and “fruit your mushrooms
* Ideas for how to store and use your mushrooms after you harvest them

We will also have a cook and taste demonstration
